First of all, I got a call from Cedar Valley Rescue today about fostering. They had called a few days ago about a dog that appeared to be allergic to their cleaning supplies. Her feet were cracking and bleeding. I had agreed to foster her. Then, they called me back today. They said that she is much improved and they have decided against putting her into a foster. But, the foster coordinator said that they had 15 kittens that had been dumped on the side of the road the day before and ended up at the shelter today. 6 are feral and very unfriendly. All 15 have severe respiratory infections and are going to the vet at some point. She had asked me to foster 9 kittens that would all be on medication. I was all for it, but wanted to check with my vet before I committed to taking them. My vet forbid it. He said with the 2 new kittens that we have that have only had their 1st vaccines, my diabetic cat, my pups and my senior dog it would be too great of a risk. He said it is airborne and everyone would more than likely end up with it. So, I had to decline the foster
However, yesterday I went to the vet to pick up my fosters diabetic kitty food. A gentleman and his son walked in with a beautiful red chow/shepherd mix and a little puppy. The big dog walked right up to me, very calmly and gently and just stood by me. He was so wonderful and polite. So, as I am petting and loving the furbaby the man asks if I am interested in adopting a dog. I found out that it was this great big teddy bear that had instantly taken to me. Long story short, they were supposed to watch the dog for a relative for a month after a domestic dispute that involved SWAT and a huge mess that terrified the dog and they have now had him for 11 months. He is due to go back to his owner next month. However, the man said that they are not at all comfortable putting the dog back in the situation and that there are some really bad things in the past with this owner and the care of the dog. He is 8 years old. He was neutered a week ago. He is so calm and polite. They have children and said he does great with cats and other dogs too. So, I am torn in the decision of if I have room for another furbaby or not. I would really love to give him a happy, loving forever home. |

It would probably be best for the dog to have you take him, , but the man trying to arrange the adoption does not own the dog. That may be a problem, depending on how badly the original owner wants the dog.
Be careful. _________________

The ownership issue is a tricky one.
It sounds like the dog would be better off with you. But if the relative who currently has custody ever tells the owner where the dog went you could be putting yourself in conflict with a possibly violent person. Also if the dog is chipped the info could get back to them (not that you let your dogs roam the neighborhood but things happen, a friend lost her dog for a week following an auto accident)
There is a term called "willfull blindness" meaning it is not ok to ignore a crime or misconduct by another for your own convienience or protection.
All that being said if I was in the same position I would have a hard time not taking him home if I had the room. I commend your willingness to help and if you do god bless, but keep the welfare of your current household inmind, both human and animal |

So, I called and expressed my concerns about adopting Jasper. The couple called the mother, who was the owner of the dog. She said that she has no problem with them rehoming Jasper with 2 conditions. If there is ever a problem or something happens and I can't keep him, they want me to give him back to them. Also, they want to be able to come and check up on him in a few weeks and see how he has adjusted.
So, Jasper will be coming to meet the family and furbabies on Monday afternoon. I will either be keeping him that day or waiting for another week until after my boxer is neutered and the kitties are spayed so that they have time to recuperate after surgery. So, we will see how it goes on Monday. But, I am getting another senior furbaby to join the clan. |

Congrats on your new addition. Sounds like the ownership issue is all worked out .
I love the name Jasper, I had a chestnut quarter horse named Jasper when I was young, he was a wonderful guy. |

| I would make sure you get something dated and signed from the owner surrendering him. |

| Well, unfortunately now I think that I am going to have to put off adopting Jasper for a few weeks at least. My pugglie's cherry eye came back with a vengence last night. The vet was able to put it back twice, but advised that surgery was the next step. So, I feel it is only right to all the animals involved to get her medical issues taken care of before I introduce another dog into the family. I am going to call the vet this morning and see if surgery is indeed needed. |

This may be moot anyway, but I'd be careful about an "open" adoption with (I assume) violence/criminal behaviour in the original family. I wouldn't be giving the orig. family my home address/phone number (email contact only), and I'm not sure about "visits" either... you could be putting yourself in the middle of something very nasty, even with an owner surrender paper.
I hope your pug is feeling better. |

| Jasper will be coming to me, but it is going to be a few weeks before he does. My puglie is having surgery on August 19th to repair her cherry eye. I want to get that taken care of and make sure that there are no complications before I introduce a new member into the family. I think that is only fair to everyone involved. I want to be able to give Jasper the time and attention that he needs to adjust to a new home. |
